Brief History of Matcha

Matcha's origins go very far back, originating in China. In China, this was known as "mo cha" and eventually mostly died off when banned by the Ming Dynasty.
Japanese students in China observed the method of grinding tea and brought it back to Japan. Japan then integrated this method into a ritualistic culture rooted in tradition and royalty, and became an integral part of Japanese culture.
Matcha had also spread to Korea, known as malcha, but due to the culture, tea did not become much of an important part of society and still isn't.

Today, matcha is a very well known tea, due to its spread over social media to the US. You can find matcha everywhere these days, and is why it is important to know where you are sourcing it from. Not all matcha is made equally and poor quality leads to very bitter, astringent tastes.

Closing

As said in Japanese tea ceremony:

一期一会
Meaning each and every encounter and bowl of matcha is a unique event that can't be redone, meaning each expereience must be treasured.
